CASE STUDY 2: Lighting Manufacturer Sees the Light: Savings from Consolidated Packaging

The Challenge

  • One of the largest lighting company's in the Midwest was experiencing a product damage rate greater than 90% during shipping.
  • They tried increasing the internal packaging but that only added to their packaging and labor costs continued to climb and did not solved the damage rate.
  • Customer satisfaction rates were falling, additional freight costs were rising, and replacement parts, invoicing and reconciliation charges were out of control.

The Solution

  • Rather than examining just the troubled product, Packaging Design looked at the packaging strategies for all their products.
  • After brainstorming with their engineering department, manufacturing and shipping people, and our designers developed a carton that not only reduced packaging costs, it consolidated several of their lines from four package sizes down to one.
  • Packaging Design assisted this manufacturer in reducing their labor costs, increased customer satisfaction, reduced their damage return rate, and consolidated their SKU's.
